As a child, when someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, the answer that kept coming back was a music teacher. As time went by, I learned to play the piano and sang in choirs. Being a musician became a big part of my identity. The possibility of being a vocal coach started to seem like more of a reality.

I didn’t get the greatest thrill from performing myself; it was coaching and watching others perform that energized me. During my first year of college, I realized that music was a hobby, and the field of learning and development was my true passion.

I consider myself to be a life-long learner. Though many formal learning experiences have contributed to my education, what I find more important are the numerous teachers, managers, and mentors that have shaped who I am as a professional, a mother, a friend, and a citizen. 

These are the people who invested their time in talking with me, challenging me, and supporting me to help me pursue my passions. I feel so fortunate to have a diverse network of individuals I can call on, and who can call on me when needed. I treasure the connections I make with others.

I grew up during the 1980s in Reston, Virginia, one of the first planned communities in the United States. Neighbors took time to get to know each other. Respecting and appreciating differences was the norm. Everyone contributed something to the community for the greater good, and we took care of the nature around us.

I learned what leadership was and had the opportunity to meet some incredible community leaders. I witnessed different leadership styles and complex personalities. I loved listening to people. Their stories and feelings were music to my ears.
