While there are many definitions and types of coaching, the definition that I prefer to use is taken from George Mason University’s Leadership Coaching for Organizational Well-being program:

“An intentional conversation in which the coach uses inquiry and feedback to support self-directed learning, increased self-awareness, and enhanced capability to thrive.”

Choosing your coach

Working with a coach may cause you to feel extremely vulnerable and uncomfortable. It is a partnership that requires the utmost confidentiality and trust. If you decide to work with a coach, the International Coaching Federation (ICF) recommends that you take these steps:

1. Do your homework

Educate yourself about what coaching is, what it isn’t and what the coaching process entails.

2. Reflect on your goals and your objectives

Summarize what you expect to accomplish by partnering with a coach. With a clear idea of your desired outcomes, you can better choose a coach practitioner who is well-equipped to help you develop a strategy for achieving them.

3. Interview at least three coaches

Ask each coach about his or her experience, skills and qualifications, and request at least two references. Coaching is an important relationship, so look for a personal connection between you and the coach you choose.

4. Confirm Credibility

Research each coach’s training, professional memberships and credentials.
